WEED
CONTROL IN SUGARCANE CROP
|
|
'Surya'
best weed killer developed by Nagarjuna Group Co.Ltd.
This is
same as Atrazine 50% WP recommended by the Agricultural University.
In Sugarcane Crop under favourable conditions weed growth
will also be more. Weeds present generally under local conditions in Sugarcane
are Echinochloa Sp, cenchrus ciliaris, cynodon dactylon, cyperus sp, Trianthema
Portulacastrum, Cordanthera Uliginosa, Parthenium hysterophorus, coccinia
indica etc.
- Weeds compete with the Sugarcane crop for the applied fertilizers,
water and sunshine and hence crop growth suffers.
- In the first one or two months of Sugarcane planting weeds do the
maximum loss to the crop.
- If more weeds are there in Sugarcane field the number of tillers will
be less and Sugarcane crop will be weak due to weed competition.
- As per research results and estimates by scientists, because of weeds
there will be 12 to 83% loss in sugarcane yields.
Weed growth will be fast than the planted sugarcane crop
growth. In sugarcane crop if weed control is not done in the first 20
to 30 days then the loss cannot be recouped even if good care is taken
later. If timely wedding is not done or if the weeds are not removed completely
along with their roots while weeding, then loss is more to Sugarcane crop.
Before the germination of Sugarcane buds, weeds in the field
should be controlled, since heavy infestiation of weeds prevents proper
germination of buds. In Sugarcane field between rows weeds can be removed
easily but removing weeds effectively in between hills is difficult. Non
availability of labour for the weeding at the right time, more expenditure
and inefficient weeding with hand weeding by labour are the big problems
faced by the Sugarcane farmer. So chemical weed control is the only recommended
solution as per the research results under the above conditions.
Chemical weed control
Agricultural university research results revealed that Altrazine
50WP herbicide is superior over other herbicides in controlling weeds
in Sugarcane crop (Atrazine 50% WP is Nagarjuna's 'Surya' weedicide).
Surya Weed control herbicide
This relates to Triazine chemical group. Source material
in this is Atrazine 50WP. It is white powder dissolves well in water.
This controls weeds before they germinate. All types of weeds generally
occuring in Sugarcane field are controlled by this weed killer.
Method of Working
- Surya herbicide generally enters the root system of the weed and acts.
- Surya weedkiller enters the stem of the weed through their root system
and hinders the process of photosynthesis.
- By the action of Surya weedicide the growth of the weed is hindered
by less energy received by the weeds and thereby weed plant becomes
weak leading to its death.
- Surya herbicide residual action is more on plants and soil. So gives
good results in control of weeds in Sugarcane crop.
Method of Usage
- Before 3 to 5 days of Sugarcane sett planting Surya herbicide should
be mixed in water and to be sprayed uniformly in the Sugarcane field.
- For each one acre of Sugarcane field for clay or heavy soils use 21/2
kg and for sandy or light soil use 2 kg of Surya herbicide.
- Surya herbicide may be sprayed using 200 to 250 litres of water per
acre depending upon the moisture present in the soil.
- If enough moisture is available in the soil Surya herbicide works
well.
- To spray surya herbicide any hand operated Sprayer can be used. But
to spray use WFN 040 nozzle (Flat spray nozzle).
- Even after the germination of sugarcane buds also when the surya herbicide
is sprayed it doesnot harm the crop. Some weeds may grow even after
the handweeding of inter, and intra row spaces at about 45 days after
Sugarcane planting. To control these weeds Surya herbicide can be sprayed
at that time also.
- To control weeds in ratoon crop also surya weed killer spray works
effectively.
Hints for higher yields in Sugarcane Cultivation
Sugarcane is the important crop in East and west Godavari
districts. In these districts soil, water and environment are favourable
for Sugarcane cultivation. Still the average yields are below 30 to 35
tones per acre. In the near by states yields realised are upto 60 to 70
tones. By following scientific methods of cultivation it has been proved
that there is scope for increasing the yields per acre and sugar recovery
also.
In the east and west Godavari districts to increase yields
in Sugarcane along with arrangements for improving the drainage, the following
package of practice should be followed:
- Selection of variety: with the previous experience of your area a
variety with high yielding ability, with tolerate to pests and diseases
to be selected.
- Sugarcane setts should be selected from 6 to 7 months crop which is
tolerant to pests and diseases. From healthy crop the buds at the top
of a mature cane only to be used as seed material for better germination.
- Deep ploughing, and deep trenches are to be prepared (After Paddy
cultivation at 25cms deep hard pans will be formed. So deep ploughing
required).
- Full phosphorous dose, half potash dose from the recommended dose
of fertilizer to your area to be used as basal dressing in the last
ploughing.
- Seed treatment should be given to the seed setts to prevent pests
and diseases attack.
- Seed setts should be dipped for 15 minutes in the solution prepared
with 1 gram Zen (carbendazim) and 2ml Malathion mixture mixed in one
litre of water.
- After 3 to 5 days of Sugarcane Planting when enough moisture is available
in the soil for better weed control spray 2 kg Surya weed control chemical
(Atrazin 50 WP) per acre.
- Avoiding water stagnation, irrigation should be given at optimum quantities.
- Apply fertilizers recommended to your area for top dressing. For the
first crop entire nitrogen dose, balance half dose of Potash fertilizers
to be applied in two splits at 45 and 90 days after planting in the
furrows and to be covered.
- In the ratoons crop the above mentioned top dressing should be done
before 45 days after planting.
- If the crop is not subjected to water stress Early Shoot borer attack
will be less. For control of this pest apply Sanvex 4G granules after
20-25 days of planting.
- At 30 and 40 days after planting polyfeed 1% solution and at 60 days
after planting Multi-k 1% solution to be sprayed for enhancement of
number of tillers and there by to increase yield.
- For pest management release Apricania parasites in the field.
- Two times trash twisting to be done to avoid lodging of cane.
- The cane should be cut at harvest close to the ground as maximum sucrose
is at the bottom and sent to mill with in 24 hours after harvest.
Precaution: Surya weedkiller can be used at appripriate
time to get good results. We are only responsible for this chemical's
quality. Since the time and method of application of this chemical by
the users is not in our hands, we are not responsible for the results.
