Bengalgram

Varieties

  • Jyothi Matures in 100-110 days. Yield varies from 16-18q ha-1.
  • Annigeri Duration 100-110 days. Yield potential is 18-25q ha-1.
  • Swetha (ICCV 2) Kabuli type, matures in 80-85 days, yield varies from 15-16q ha-1. Tolerant to witt. Suitable for late planting.
  • Kranthi (ICCV 37) Desi variety matures in 100-110 days, yield ranges from 18-25q ha-1. Tolerant to witt.
  • ICCV 10 (Bharat) Matures in 100-120 days, yield varies from 18-25q ha-

Gram Caterpillar

  • Monitoring with pheromone traps to take effective control measures against early instars of the pest.
  • Spraying of diflubenzuron @ 250g ha-1 with selective insecticide such as endosulfan.
  • Use Neem formulations for insect repeling (Neem oil 0.5%)
  • Use bio-agents like B.t at 1.0 kg ha-1 formulations and NPV at 500 L.E ha-1.
  • Spray at pre and post flowering stage with acephate @ 1g l-1 or quinalphos @ 2ml l-1 or chlorpyriphos @ 2.5ml l-1 or thiodicarb @ 1.0 g l-1 of water.
  • Hand picking and destruction of grownup larvae reduces crop losses.

Disease control

  • Wilt : Seed treatment with captan or thiram @ 2.5g kg-1 seed. Grow tolerant varieties, ICCV 37 (Kranthi), ICCV 2 (Swetha).
  • Dry root rot : Seed treatment with captan or thiram @ 2.5g kg-1 seed. Grow resistant variety, ICCV 10 (Bharat).
  • Stunt : Destruction of diseased plants. Grow resistant variety Jyothi.

Post Harvest Technology

  • Storage : Properly dried un-infested produce can be safely stored in nylong bag, polythene lined gunny bag or compactly knitted gunny bag even up to a period of 180 days.
  • The walls of the store room can be sprayed with chlorpyriphos @ 3ml l-1 of water to reduce cross infestation. The gunny bags used for storage can also be sprayed with chlorpyriphos or dipped in chlorpyriphos solution and air dried.
