Selection of varieties
- The varieties under cultivation fall into three habit groups. They
are: bunch (pish/Valencia), semi-spreading (Virginia bunch) and spreading
(Virginia runner).
- Selection of a suitable variety of a particular area depends on soil
type, rainfall distribution, season of cultivation, market preference,
resistance to major pests and diseases of the area, etc. Spreading types
are preferred under rainfed conditions where the rainy season is longer.
- Bunch types are preferred where the rainy season is short and also
for irrigated crop in rabi and summer seasons. Where the soils
have high clay content and harvesting is a problem, bunch types are
preferred.
