Brinjal

Water Management

Introduction

  • Water is the most important input for crop production .
  • Water application method depends on soil, climate and financial resources.
  • Water availability is the key factor to decide the water application method.
  • The decision of the farmers to select an appropriate method for water application is influenced by the following:
  • Soil capability - Land use capability.
  • Type of soil ( clay Vs. loamy soil Vs. sandy soil)
  • Cropping system (Paddy system Vs. vegetable cultivation).
  • Rainfall ( assured rainfall Vs. uncertainity Vs no rainfall )
  • Evopotranspiration (wind velocity, temperature and other factors).
  • Water supply sources (canal command or tank command or well command or combination).
  • The available quantity of supply and rate of supply.
  • The cost of water (canal, electric motors or oil engine).
  • The quality of water
  • The size of land holdings (big land holding Vs. small land holding).
  • Availability and cost of labour, local traditions and skill.
  • Ability of farmers to invest and feasibility for mechanization.
  • Facilities for land shaping in relation to soil.
  • Irrigation infrastructure for better conveyance efficiency and application efficiency.

Critical stages for Water requirement

  • Nursery and early vegetative phase requires copious irrigation.
  • Excessive irrigation at seedling stage may cause damping off disease resulting high level of seedling mortality.
  • Stagnation of water at vegetative phase results in poor stand of growth due to build-up of soil borne disease (wilt, root rot) resulting in mortality of plants and poor yield.

Irrigation Methods

  • Among the different methods, basin furrow/border furrows is found to be versatile one, because of its applicability to different soil and climatic conditions.

  • Totally about 15- 18 irrigations are required fom seed to seed production of brinjal.
  • The above irrigation schedule may be adjusted according to the weather condition and receipt of rains.
