Redgram

Weed Management

Introduction Weed Control

Introduction

  • Among the pulses, redgram is the only crop that was a characteristically slow initial growth rate. This makes redgram less competitive with weeds. Weeds grow profusely in the rainy season due to the favourable moisture conditions and if not timely controlled, can cause upto 50 per cent reduction in seed yield.

Common weeds of redgram

Cyperus rotundus Celosia argentea
Echinochloa sp. Commelina bengalensis
Digitaria sp. Phyllanthus niruri
Doctylotenium aegyptium Digera arvensis
Setaria glouca Euphorbia sp.
Amaranthus sp.

Weed Control

  • One hand weeding at 30 days after sowing.
  • 2-3 intercultivations for effective weed control after sowing
  • Chemical weed control

Pre-emergence herbicides

  • Alachlor (1 kg a.i/ha)
  • Metachlor (1 kg a.i/ha)
  • Pendimethalian (1 kg a.i/ha)
  • Benthiocarb (1 kg a.i/ha)
  • Isoproturon (1 kg a.i/ha)
  • Oxadiazone (0.75 kg a.i/ha)
  • Butachlor (1 kg a.i/ha)

Weed control in Redgram

  • In red gram crop weed competition is more critical during first 3-4 weeks growth stage. Hence, weed removal by 20-25 days after sowing is more effective and remunerative.
  • Delay in weed control by one month reduces the yield by 3-4 q/ha. A weed free condition upto 45 days gives full potential yield with July sown crop.
