Distinguishing Features Of Some Flue-Cured Tobacco Varieties
Kanakaprabha
- Evolved through varietal hybridization from Delcrest
x DB 101 cross. Medium tall, 1.3 to 1.5 m high, leaves
erectly attached, stiff with raised midrib and acute
tip.
- Leaves linear elliptic, dark green, 18-20 curable
leaves, uniform in leaf maturity. Flowering from 65
to 70 days after planting. Panicle compact, heavy with
light pink flowers.
CTRI Special
- By purification and selection and towards specific characters from
the variety Special FCV tall 1.5m, to1.7 m high, semi-open habit with
horizontally inserted leaves dropping at the margins, Colour of the
stem creamy green.
- Leaves bright green in colour, 22 to 24 curable leaves. Margin undulating,
Flowering 65-70 days after planting. Panicle loose, flowers light pink.
Leaf fast maturing.
CTRI Special (MR)
- An isogenic line of CTRI Special with glutinous type
of resistance to mosaic disease (Tobacco Mosaic Virus).
Morphological characters are similar to CTRI Special.

mutant, Tall 1.9 m high.

- Vigorous in growth with medium broad, ovate, puckered, think bodied
light green leaves.
- Short internodes, 26-28 curable leaves. Flowering in 80 days after
planting. Large panicle with good seed setting and leaf fast maturing.
Jayasree (MR)
- An isogenic line of Jayasree carrying glutinous type
of TMV resistance. Morphological features are same as
Jayasree.

leaf broadly lanceolate with wavy margin and acute tip.

- Released in 1992.A variety with productivity level above 2000 kg/ha
and 70% bright grade out turn. Plants with semi erect long and broad
leaves with entire margin and prominent auricle near leaf base.
- Medium green cast in nature with short internodes with 23-24 curable
leaves per plant and 28 total leaves on plant.
VT-1158
- Resistant to TMV and has high productivity level of 2000 kg/ha. Plant
habit open with horizontal inserted drooping medium
puckered and good bodied leaves.
- Colour of matured leaf is light green and stem is
creamy green. Flowers in about 70-80 days, short internodes
with 20-24 curable leaves and less prominent auricle
near leaf base.
Mc Nair-12
- It is an erect type with dark cast. Leaves are broad ovate, inserted
vertically giving a bouquet shape.
Mc NAIR-12

- leaves are puckered, inflorescence compact and medium in flowering.

- An introduction from USA. It is a short but vigorous type with 1.1
m height under topped condition in northern light soils.
- Internodes are very close. Matures in about 65 days after planting.
Resistant black shank. It is well suited for the northern
light soils of Andhra Pradesh.
- It is an erect type with leaves distributed evenly on the stalk with
moderate internodal space. The stalk and the leaves are dark green in
colour. Leaf is long and broad, ovate with entire margin and acute tip.
- The midrib is prominent with regular veining pattern.
Auricle is broad, smooth leaf surface, leaves are medium
to heavy bodied and upto the middle plant positions,
leaves show a rolling growth with dropping upto the
centre of the leaf.
- Flowers in about 55-60 days after planting and flowers are whitish
pink. Gives about 1591 kg/ha of cured leaf yield.
16/103(MR)
16/103MR

- Plant grows up to 1.65 m. in un-topped condition.

- It resembles the presently cultivated variety 16/103 in all respects.
This variety requires 70 kg N/ha under normal conditions.
- The plant possesses 18 to 20 curable leaves with short internodes.
This variety produces deep lemon to lemon orange, matured, open grained
cured leaf.
- The variety is resistant to most common disease tobacco mosaic virus
(TMV). It yields up to 1800 kg/ha cured leaf.
CM-12(KA)
- Released in 1993. Suitable for Northern Light Soil
developed from McNair-12 through Chemical mutagenesis.
- Plants are medium tall with 21-23 curable leaves. Leaves are long
and broad ovate with lightly bent leaf tip and dark green in colour
with heavy puckering.
- Internodes medium to short and maturity of leaves medium to slow.
Plant habit and nature is desirable for light soils and mostly akin
to the variety 16/103.
- This is endowed with resistance to Black Shank disease. Average yield
potentiality of the line is around 2000 kg/ha with high grade out turn,
in comparison to 16/103 and about 15% yield and quality improvement
is noticed.
NLS-4
- Plants with semi erect habit, leaves are longer (62 to 66 cm), lanceolate
with acute to acuminate tip with wavy lamina and green cast in nature
with short internodes and 20 to 22 curable leaves.
- Leaf maturity is slower than to light/medium cast varieties grown
in this tract. Resistant to all the three races of Phytopthora parasitica
var. nicotianae causing black-shank disease.
- Less susceptible to root knot (all the three sps. of Meloidogyne).
The recommended doses of fertilisers are 60-70 kg N/ha, 60 kg P2O5 and
80-120 kg K2O/ha.
- Cured leaves are deep lemon to orange coloured, open grained, medium
bodied, mature, semi flavourful oily and fluffy. Average yield under
normal conditions is 1900 kg/ha.
NLS-5
- Plants grow up to 1.6 to 1.75 m. under topped condition. Plants are
medium to tall, leaves are long, slightly broad with narrow tip.
- Leaves on maturity droop down and slightly twisted and highly puckered.
Internodes short and leaves medium to slow in maturity. It yields 24
to 26 curable leaves.
- Tolerant/resistant to black shank. Under normal management and favourable
conditions, this variety requires 80 kg N/ha and under unfavourable
conditions (excess rainfall during late kharif season), it would require
another 10 to 15 kg N/ha to produce maximum cured leaf.
- It yields around 2200 kg/ha with bright lemon orange to orange colour,
matured, open grained cured leaf.
Varieties recommended for Karnataka light soils
Swarna
- Released in 1984. A powdery mildew resistant variety developed on
kanakaprabha base and released for high rainfall zones of KLS. Which
are endemic for powdery mildew disease.
- Plants are erect with cliptic leaves. 20-22 curable
leaves. Cured produce is orange in colour bodies, open
grained and agreable aroma, yields around 1500 kg/ha
Bhavya
- Plant is tall and uniformly maturing. Resistant to black shank and
root knot. Cured leaves are orange-lemon in colour, medium bodied grainy
and less spotted, produces 60-75% bright grades under extremely dry
conditions it tends to produce spotless (J style) tobacco.
- It has yield potential of 2000 kg/ha presently grown in large areas
and meets the requirement of trade.

Varieties Of Non-FCV Tobacco (Exotic)
- "Burley-21"
and "Ky-14" were introduced in the burley tracts of Andhra Pradesh.
- The yields
range from 1200 to 1300 kg/ha. The
cured leaf of "Burley-21" is of rich tan brown colour, thin, elastic,
with high filling value and less shatterability.
- This
tobacco is highly suitable for blending with flue-cured tobacco in cigarette
manufacture due to its high-filling value.
HEBRG
- A Brazilian
tobacco HARVEL DE BOUXO RIO GRANDE (HDBRG) was introduced for cultivation
in Guntur tract which has got good export potential as "HD Burley".
- The cured
leaf has high filling value and higher leaves of nicotine and is used
for blending.
Olor-10
- A Cigar
filler tobacco variety from USA was acclimatized and introduced into
the cigar tobacco belt of Tamil Nadu.
- The leaves
are puckered and less spotted. It yields about 1800 kg/ha.

Non-FCV Tobacco (Indigenous)
- These are 'desi' types of tobacco with specific method of curing
viz., air-curing, sun-curing, shade-curing, pit-curing, ground-curing
and fire or smoke curing. The nicotine content is generally high in
these tobaccos.
Bidi Tobacco
- This is mainly grown in Kheda, Vadodara and Panchamahals districts
of Gujarat and Nipani area comprising Belgaum district of Karnataka
and part of Kolhapur as well as Sangli districts of Maharashtra.
- More than 80% of bidi tobacco is produced in Gujarat. The Bidi Tobacco
Research Station at Anand which is the main Centre of AICRP(T) is working
for the improvement of bidi and rustica tobacco. The entire bidi tobacco
area is under the improved varieties Anand-2, Anand-119, GT-4 and GT-5.
- GTH-1 is a hybrid bidi tobacco with yield level above
3600 kg/ha tolerant to root knot. Suitable for irrigated
bidi tobacco growing areas of Gujarat.

- Chama and Podali varieties were evolved through natural selection
from farmers' bulk for cultivation in North Bengal.
- Chama is early maturing with an yield potential of 1557 kg/ha Podali
(1600 kg/ha) is a late maturing variety.
Hookah Tobacco
DD 437
- It is a motihari tobacco belonging to N.rustica, evolved as a single
plant selection from bulk crop of "Hemti". DD 437 was released in 1977
for the motihari tobacco growing areas of West Bengal. It yields about
1865 kg/ha with good flavour.
Sonar Motihari
- With a yield of 1690 kg/ha was released for commercial
cultivation in hookah tract of North Bengal.
- GC-1 (N.Rustica) was developed and released
by BTRS, Anand. Yields 31% more than local variety.
The yield ranges from 2000-4000 kg/ha under middle Bihar
conditions.
Cheroot Tobacco
- Bhavani Special" (2837 kg/ha) and "Sendarapatty Special" (2100 kg/ha)
were released in 1980 and 1986 respectively for country cheroot tract
of Tamil Nadu.
- Lanka Special, a powdery mildew resistant variety was developed and
released during 1981 for cultivation on the islands of Godavari river.
- It yields 2500 kg/ha of cured leaf having good aroma, burning quality
and high nicotine content. The leaf is petiolate and boat-shaped.
- DR-1 released in 1960 was also under cultivation in river side lankas.

- Natu tobacco varieties viz., "Prabhat" (1500 kg/ha), in 1977
and "Viswanath" (1800 kg/ha) in 1986 were released for cultivation
for natu tract of Andhra Pradesh.

- krishna variety (2250 kg/ha) was released in 1986 for the cigar filler
tobacco belt of Tamil Nadu.
Cigar Wrapper Tobacco
- S-5 variety was released in 1977 for wrapper tobacco tract of North
West Bengal. It yields 1476 kg/ha of fine, silky and thin bodied cured
leaves with light green/brown shades.
