Sorghum

Land Preparation

Ploughing

  • Plough the field with an iron plough once and twice with a country plough. Fine tilth is not needed as it affects germination and yield.
  • In soils with sub-soil hard pan, chiselling should be done every year at the start of each season. After chiselling, plough once with disc plough and twice with cultivator.

Application Of Farm Yard Manure (Fym)

  • Spread FYM @ 12.5 tonnes/ha or composted coir pith along with 2kg of Azospirillum (10 packets/ha) on the unploughed field and incorporate the manure in soil by working with country plough.
  • Well decomposed poultry manure @ 5 tonnes/ha may also be applied to improve the physical properties of soil and grain yield.

Forming Ridges And Furrows

  • Normally sorghum is grown in ridges and furrows or flat beds.
  • Form ridges and furrows of six meter length with a spacing of 45 cm between ridges.
  • Form irrigation channels across furrows.
  • Alternatively, flat beds of 10 sq.m or 20 sq.m can be formed depending on availability of water.

Application Of Fertilizers

  • Apply half the dose of nitrogen (45 kg/ha) and full dose of phosphorus (45 kg/ha) and potassium (45 kg/ha) before planting.
  • In the case of ridges and furrows, open a 5 cm deep furrow on the side of the ridge at two thirds the distance from top of ridge and the bottom. Place the fertilizer mixer along this furrow and cover with soil upto 2 cm.
  • In flat beds, mark lines to a depth of 5 cm and 45 cm apart. Place the fertilizer mixer at a depth of 5 cm along the lines. Cover the lines upto 2 cm from the top before sowing.
  • In the case of sorghum raised as intercrop with a pulse crop at 2:1 ratio (blackgram or greengram or cowpea) open furrows 30 cm apart to a depth of 5 cm. Apply fertilizer mixture in the lines in which sorghum is to be sown and cover upto 2 cm.
