Soils And Climate

Climate Soils Ecological Requirements

Climate

  • Toria, Rai and Mustard is grown in Rabi season.
  • This is more sensitive to climatic factors than other crops grown in this season.
  • For this crop 15° C to 25° C temperature is suitable.
  • For germination stightly high tempratine (27° C) and for growth low temperature is required.
  • At ripening stage as germination high temperature is required.
  • Cold temperature, bright sun shine and enough soil moisture increases oil content of seed.
  • During flowering rain, cloudy weather, frost and high humidity is harm ful.
  • In this weather there more attack by insects and pod formation is less.
  • In Mustard and Taria crop due to frost seeds die because of which yield reduces.
  • Less than 0° C temperature is harmful for all the varieties but taria is more sensitive to it and gets damaged badly.
  • The areas having 75 to 100cm. Annual rains are best suited for this crop. In high rain fall areas (more than 150cm annual rainfall) it cannot be cultivated properly.
  • At ripening stage high velocity winds and rain is harm ful. At this stage dry weather and open sky is essential.

Soils

  • Rai and Mustard can be grown in sandy to heavy clay soils.
  • In its whole life ispan enough soil moisture is required.
  • In heavy soil slight rain reduces germination percentage and rain during flowering weakens the plants.
  • For Mustard cultivation Alluvial loam is the best soil.
  • Black cotton soil is not recommended for mustard cultivation.
  • Tarai soils of U.P., Sandy loam of Punjab and Hariyana, and heavy loam of Bihar and west
  • Bengal are best suitable for yellow mustard cultivation.
  • For brown and black mustard light soils and for yellow mustard heavy soils are recommended.
  • Mustard crop is very sensitive to water logging therefore soil should be well drained.
  • Acidic soils are suited for mustard cultivation but slightly Alkaline and neutral soils are considered good.
  • Mustard plant is suitable for high Alkalinity but the soils having 7-8 ph are considered as the best. This can be grown in calcarious, Sandy and shallow soil if enough moisture is available

Ecological Requirements

  • In India rapeseed and mustard is grown during winter season.
  • The crop needs about 18°C - 25°C temperature.
  • The crop prefers low humidity.
  • There should not be any rainfall especially at the time of flowering.
  • Rainfall, high humidity and cloudy weather are not good for the crop during winter as it invites aphids and the crop gets spoilt completely.
  • Under Rainfed, conditions 1 - 2 preflowering rains help in boosting the grain yield.
  • Excessive cold and frost are harmful to the crop.
  • Mustards thrive best in medium or heavy loam soils.
  • Heavy soils subjected to water logging should be avoided, as the crop cannot tolerate such conditions.
  • The crop is grown during winter season and there is very little chance of water logging but still due to heavy winter rains the water may get accumulated and cause a temporary water logging.
  • Very light soils usually cause a serious moisture stress.
  • Saline and alkaline soils are often not fit for the crop though it has good tolerance to such conditions.
