Introduction

  • The Field should be free from weeds to procure a high yield.
  • Weeds if present in the field not only consume fertilizer and water but also light, air and space and so the production of the mustard crop reduces drastically.
  • Yield loss depends directly on the density of the weeds present in the field.
  • Weeds growing with the mustard crop should be removed on time.
  • First weeding should be done 30-35days after sowing.
  • Hoeing and intercultural operations should be done a few days after irrigation since weeds would have sprouted. Thus the weeds are remove and the crust is broken.
  • First few days of its life span mustard field should be totally free from weeds.
  • During first interculture operation extra week plants should be removed from the field and and 10 to 15cm. Distance between plants should be maintained.

Yield Losses:

  • The loss incurred doing the presence of heavy weed infestation is about 15-40% of the yield.

Weed Control

  • Weeds are control by mechanical and chemical methods.

Mechanical Methods

  • The weeds are removed manually with the help of Khurpi or any other sharp instrument.

Disadvantages:

  • It is a time consuming process
  • Unavailability of labour results in inefficient growth of the crop.
  • It is not economical

Chemical Method :

  • The weeds can be control by using certain chemicals like 2, 4 D are bidder etc.
  • 2,4D is a widely available chemical and the market which is sold under different chemical brands
  • Liquid form is available as 72% EC. Bladex-G are bidder and 36% EC Bladed -C or vedon.
  • Powder form of 2,4-D is available as 80% EC Tefaseel and Phernokason.
  • To destroy weeds Tefaseen or Phernokason is mixed @625gms in 400-500litres of water and sprayed 30-35days after sowing.
  • Gehoon ka mama and junglee jayee are the main weed problems of weed.
  • Use tribunyle, Dosanex iso protoneuron, metha bezethaio uran to control gahoon ka mama and junglee jayee. 50% Wettahle powder should be used @1.5kg p/hr and 75% should be used @1kg/hr mixed with 500-700 litres of water and sprayed in the fields after first irrigation when the plant has 5-6leaves.
  • The field should have ample amount of moisture, which can be gauged when the mud does not stick to the shoes
