Improvement Of Mustard And Rapeseeds In India

  • Mustard and Rapeseed have been cultivated in India since time immemorable but there has nebver been a very huge success due to certain bottlenecks that the indian farmer faces in the cultovatiovn of mustard and Rapeseed.

1. Mass Selection

  • In this method the progeny of a large number of selected plants are taken for work.
  • The mean values are arranged in a order and the progenies whose means fall on a required segment of the distribution curves are selected.
  • All the selected lines are pooled and the bulk planting ia done from which selection of lines as the next step is done.

2.Hybridization:

  • Sometimes mass selection does not bring out required plant types of higher yields and superior quality.
  • Synthetic varieties in self sterile mustard need to be evolved by crossing of required parentages.
  • Raising of inbreds and selfing in self steril forms of Brassica is done thropugh bud pollination.
  • The buds are pollinated two three days befor their opening by pollens opf ythe flowers of the same plant.
  • Next morning the stigma is touched by dehised anthers and then covered with a muslin bag.
  • Theses inbred lines are selected for crossing and after testing the combining ability the best parents are selected.
  • Growing different inbred lines and allowing them to cross by natural means with a common source of pollens may test the combining ability.
  • Next year the lines are grown in a replicated manner and their petrdfomance in terms of required characters is considered that makes the basis of combining ability.

Results of crop improvement of mustard and Rapeseed.
