Water Management

  • Mustard is a crop of 110-120 days duration.
  • Mustard requires about 31-40 cms of water.
  • The first irrigation should be given at the flowering stage which is about 30 days after sowing.
  • The second irrigation should be given at the pod formation stage which is about 60-65 days after sowing.
  • When mustard is grown as mixed crop it is irrigated as maincrop.
  • In many areas pure mustard crop is grown is unirrigated crop.
  • Mustard crop is very sensitive to lack of soil moisture at flowering and grain formation stages.
  • One irrigation after 25days of sowing is necessary in Taria crop.
  • If it rains few days before are after scheduled irrigation time then crop should be irrigated.
  • Mustard crop field should have a good water drainage system.
  • Mustard plant is very sensitive to water logging conditions.
  • When only one irrigation is available then it should be given 30 to 35days after sowing.
