Land Preparation

Preparation of Land

  • The Rapeseed and mustard require a fine, firm and moist seed bed for proper germination of the seed and growth of the young seedlings.
  • The field should be given one presowing irrigation if there is less moisture in the field.
  • The field should be given a deep ploughing soon after the Kharif crop is harvested in the middle of September.
  • The field should then be ploughed 3 - 4 times with a desi plough and followed by planking after each ploughing.
  • The crop and weed stubbles along with established weeds should be picked up thrown out of the field.
  • In case of dryland, areas where pre-sowing irrigation may not be given the seed may be spread in a damp place at night and next morning it should be sown. This is done to increase the germination percentage of the seeds.
  • Mostly mustard crop is grown as mixed crop in such situation land preparation for mustard crop is done as main crop.
  • For pure mustard crop. After the harvest of Kharif crop land is ploughed deep with mould board plough once which followed by 2 to 3 ploughing by harrow cultivator or desi plough.
  • After ploughing with the help of plank (pata) mud clods should be broken as small as possible.
  • For mustard cultivation prepared soil should be well pulverized and fine.
  • With less no of plantings land can also be prepared nicely when there is enough moisture in the soil.
  • Mustered crop seed needs good amount of soil moisture to germinate where Taria can germinate in less moisture comparatively.
